Since Its Publication In 1984, The House On Mango Street

Since its publication in 1984, The House on Mango Street grows in popularity within inner-city grade schools to universities across the country -- it is a coming of age tale for a Mexican-American girl named Esperanza Cordero living in a fictional poor neighborhood in Chicago called Mango Street. Though it is called a novel, Cisneros creates The House on Mango Street with forty-four vignettes that thoughtfully depicts Chicano culture and what are the roles of women in this society; as Esperanza observes different characters in each vignette, she understands that the same force that ensnares Esperanza to Mango Street is the same force that encourages Esperanza’s desire to leave Mango Street. She doesn’t fit the norms of Chicano culture because Mexicans â€Å"don’t like their women strong† (10) and she is just that – a strong Mexican woman. Yet, when Esperanza describes her great-grandfather, she doesn’t describe him like how she did with her great-grandmother. She says, â€Å"until my great-grandfather threw a sack over her head and carried her off.† (11) Esperanza introduces her great-grandfather with an action and not a trait; therefore, she doesn’t give the same treatment to her great-grandfather. She does not develop his character and the reader must make assumptions about his character. Also, Esperanza portrays Latino culture as reduced her great-grandmother to mere object because she compares her strong-willed grandmother to a â€Å"fancy chandelier.† (11) She continues to describe her great-grandmother and starts to rel ate with her by wondering â€Å"if she [great-grandmother] made the best with what she got or was she sorry because she couldn’t be all the things she wanted to be.† (11) Again, she adds depth to her great-grandmother’s character by showing her sadness and as a result, Esperanza’s characterization shows which relative she likes or dislikes. Piaget And Vygotsky Essay Everyday life is characterized by conscious purpose. From reaching for food todesigning an experiment, our actions are directed at goals. This purpose revealsitself partly in our conscious awareness and partly in the organization of ourthoughts and actions. Cognition is the process involved in thinking and mentalactivity, such as attention, memory and problem solving. Much past and presenttheory has emphasized the parallels between the articulated prepositionalstructure of language and the structure of an internal code or language ofthought. In this paper I will discuss language and cognition and two famoustheorist who were both influential in forming a more scientific approach toanalyzing the process of cognitive development. Jean Piaget There are those thatsay that Jean Piaget was the first to take children`s thinking seriously. Although Piaget never thought of himself as a child psychologist his realinterest was epistemology, the theory of knowledge, which, like physics, wasconsidered a branch of philosophy until Piaget came along and made it a science(2000). Children and their reasoning process fascinated Piaget. He began tosuspect that observing how the child`s mind develops might discover the key tohuman knowledge. Piaget`s insight opened a new window into the inner workings ofthe mind. Jean Piaget has made major theoretical and practical contributions toour understanding of the origins and evolution of knowledge. Stages of ChildhoodDevelopment In his work Piaget identified stages of mental growth. He theorizedthat all children progressed through stages of cognitive development. Hediscovered that children think and reason differently at different periods intheir lives. Piaget believed that everyone passed through a sequence of fourqualitatively distinct stages. They are sensorimotor, preoperational, conc reteoperational and formal operational. In the sensorimotor stage, occurring frombirth to age 2, the child is concerned with gaining motor control and learningabout physical objects. This stage promotes that thought is based primarily onaction. Every time an infant does any action such as holding a bottle orlearning to turn over, they are learning more about their bodies and how itrelates to them and their environment. Piaget maintains that there are sixsub-stages in the sensorimotor stage although children pass through three majorachievements. In the preoperational stage, from ages 2 to 7, the child ispreoccupied with verbal skills. At this point the child can name objects andreason intuitively. Piaget has divided this stage into the preoperational phaseand the intuitive phase. In the preoperational phase children use language andtry to make sense of the world but have a much less sophisticated mode ofthought than adults. They need to test thoughts with reality on a daily basisand do not appear to be able to learn from generalizations made by adults. Inthe intuitive phase the child slowly moves away from drawing conclusions basedsolely on concrete experiences with objects. However, the conclusions drawn arebased on rather vague impressions and perceptual judgments. It becomes possibleto carry on a conversation with a child. Children develop the ability toclassify objects on the basis of different criteria. At this stage childrenlearn to count and use the concept of numbers. In the concrete operationalstage, from ages 7 to 12, the child begins to deal with abstract concepts suchas numbers and relationships. It is here that children learn mastery of classes,relations, numbers and how to reason. In this stage a person can do mentaloperations but only with real concrete objects, events or situations. Logicalreasons are understood. For example, a concrete operational person canunderstand the need to go to bed early when it is necessary to rise early thenext mornin g. A pre-operational child, on the other hand, does not understandthis logic and substitutes the psychological reason, I want to stay up. Finally, in the formal operational stage, age 12 to 15, the child begins toreason logically and systematically. The last stage deals with the mastery ofthought (Evans, 1973). A formal operational thinker can do abstract thinking andstarts to enjoy abstract thought. The formal operational thinker is able tothink ahead to plan the solution path. Finally, the formal operational person iscapable of meta-cognition, that is, thinking about thinking. A central componentof Piaget`s developmental theory of learning and thinking is that both involvethe participation of the learner. Knowledge is not merely transmitted verballybut must be constructed and reconstructed by the learner. Piaget asserted thatfor a child to know and construct knowledge of the world the child must act onobjects and it is this action that provides knowledge of those objects (Sigel,1977). The ability to learn any cognitive content is always related to theirstage of intellectual development. Children who are at a certain stage cannot betaught the concepts of a higher stage. Intellectual growth involves threefundamental processes: assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration. Position Paragraph Assignment EssayArguments and Comparisons Egocentric speech is contrasted with socializedspeech. In other words it is non-social, non-communicative to others. It isspoken for the sake of saying it. It is usually found in three to five yearolds. Egocentric speech is split into three categories. They are repetition,monologue (thinking aloud) and dual/collective monologue. Vygotsky argues thatspeech moves from communicative ?social speech ¦ to inner egocentricspeech. Piaget proposes the opposite. He believes that children begin by voicinga personal dialogue and move to social speech. Piaget argues that egocentricspeech goes away with maturity while Vygotsky claims that it becomesinternalized as an adult. Vygotsky found that a child spoke egocentrically whenhe was grasping or remedying a situation. Comparisons of Piaget (PG) andVygotsky (VG) beliefs on egocentric speech are as follows: (PG)- Development ofthinking- Language moves from individual to social. (VG)-Dev elopment ofthinking- Language moves from the social to the individual. (PG)-Egocentric Speech is simply an accompaniment to a child-s actions (VG)-Egocentric speech is not accompaniment: it helps child to reason (PG)-Egocentric speech appears first, dies out and is replaced by socialized speech(VG) Egocentric speech is not first: it gives voice to internalized?social ¦ or ?inner ¦ speech. Egocentric speech doesn-twither; it evolves upwards into inner speech (PG) Three key observations aboutegocentric speech T It is audible and not whispered T It occurs whena child thinks the others understand his egocentric talk T It occurs whenchildren act together on a task, not alone (VG)- His experiments seriouslychallenged Piaget-s three key observations about egocentric speech InThought and Language, Vygotsky (1962) analyzed Piagets work. Vygotsky believedthat Piaget had developed a clinical method that revolutionized the study ofchildrens language and thought. However, Vygotsky also ass erted that there weresome flaws in Piagets methods. Piaget combined psychology and philosophy eventhough he tried to avoid theorizing. He overlooked the role of the childsactivity with relation to thought processes. Vygotsky also disagreed withPiagets assumption that development could not be impeded or accelerated throughinstruction. In summary, Vygotsky was critical of Piagets assumption thatdevelopmental growth was independent of experience and based on a universalcharacteristic of stages. Vygotsky believed that intellectual development wascontinually evolving without an end point and not completed in stages as Piagettheorized. Although Vygotsky was critical of Piaget, he realized the importanceof the information that Piaget gathered. King Leopolds Ghost free essay sample

Adam Hochschild’s â€Å"King Leopold’s Ghost† is an account of a man’s rise of power who was very cruel and did unimaginable things. When I began reading, I wasn’t sure where the novel was going, but I soon caught on to what Hochschild was revealing. As the story begins to unfold he tells a story of King Leopold II of Belgium who managed to seize land next to the Congo River in Africa. King Leopold used political manipulation and lies to get what he wanted. King Leopold had everyone fooled that he was a humanitarian and he was in the Congo for the greater good, but that was not the case. He claimed that civilizing the Congo would keep out â€Å"Arab slave- traders† to gain support of people, but Leopold wanted something else. Leopold was very greedy, and his greed resulted in the slaying of millions of innocent people. He starts out helping Leopold gain support from political leaders and from large powers including the United States. Leopold tells countries that he wanted to set up a â€Å"Free State† in the Congo so he could civilize the region. He claimed that he would set up schools, set up trade routes, and creates jobs. Although, this was obviously just a cover up that way people would not be suspicious of what he was doing in the Congo. When Stanley sets out to find Livingstone, and explores Africa it’s the start of the colonization. Stanley followed the Congo River for â€Å"fifteen hundred miles†, which intrigued Leopold because it gave him an idea on what he had found (Hochschild 61). Leopold instantly was fascinated, but was the most interesting to him was the Congo’s ivory and rubber because Americans and Europeans we’re already buying it. Stanley and his men landscaped the area, and Stanley helped wreck their homes, and played a huge role in robbing them from their heritage. Leopold and Stanley both were alike in ways and believed â€Å"Africa was a chance to gain upward mobility towards wealth and glory† (Hochschild 63). Furthermore, as the story continues to slowly unfold and Leopold begins his rule over the Congo someone is caught on to Leopold’ intentions. A gentleman called Edmund Dene Morel is sent to Belgium from his company to watch ships being unloaded by from the Congo. Although, Morel notices something that others do not. As he investigates he then discovers that barely any trade was being exchanged for the ivory and rubber coming from the Congo. Morel came to a conclusion that it had to be indeed some kind of slave labor. As he begins to investigate he realizes his conclusion was correct. As he continues to look into this matter, he then discovers that Leopold had a lot more power over the â€Å"Congo Free State† than he originally thought (Hochschild 4). Morel began to see for himself what was happening in the Congo and began to tell other officials and he wrote many essays about the current events. His plan was to make the world aware what was going on through his writings. Hochschild notes in the book that, â€Å"Morels attacks soon drew a response from the Royal Palace† (Hochschild 192). As Morel began his writings it started to gain a lot of attention. Morel sent a man called Roger Casement to the Congo to investigate Morels statements which ended up being true. After this happened they formed an association called the â€Å"Congo Reform Association† which â€Å"exerted a relentless, growing pressure† (Hochschild 209). Morel and Casement we’re two of the most influential people in the book and who know what would have happened if they didn’t spend years of their lives to help these people. Leopold worked most of the slaves to death, and the others were badly beaten or either tortured as they were working to meet his production standards. For example, if the â€Å"men† were not meeting his standards they often held women hostage and raped them to ensure productivity was sufficient. Although, innocent blood was being spilled and they even cut limbs some people and surprising part is Leopold never set foot in the â€Å"free state†. Hoshschild even makes the comment that â€Å"there was something very modern about thatâ€Å"(Hochschild 4). King Leopold II had no human respect, and his own family had barley anything to do with him. I personally don’t understand how someone could stand to look themselves in the mirror after doing such horrible things, and it shows how far people would go for wealth. Throughout the book Hochschild shows the dedication of Morel, and major roles that characters played to shape the history of the Congo like Stanley, and William Sheppard (who was one of the most outspoken out of all American Congo missionaries. ) The author examined the Congo because it shows how extreme colonialism is and what it was like for people that were under a colonial rule. I think this book has a clear meaning and thesis, Hochschild wanted to expose what happened in the Congo because he felt like it had been covered up and he wanted to paint the readers a picture that they would never forget. My theory is I don’t believe that King Leopold was there for the greater good and to better the Congolese people. I think it’s obvious from the evidence I’ve already stated supports that theory. What was going on in the Congo was genocide without a doubt and I don’t think the â€Å"term† slavery doesn’t do the Congolese people justice. Following this further, some people might argue and say that what King Leopold did was not genocide because he wasn’t trying to wipe out the Congolese, just for the simple fact that he needed them to do the labor. Leopold was pushing to extract the biggest amount of rubber he could possibly get from the wild rubber vines before other tree plantations by other countries matured and reduced the cost. Basically, Leopold’s goal was to push for a high rate of goods even if that meant huge death tolls which were not just thousands; it was millions. So both could be true, but only Leopold knew what his intentions were. The author states that â€Å"The Congo in Leopold’s eyes was not the one of starving porters, raped hostages, emaciated rubber slaves, and severed hands. It was an empire of his dreams, with gigantic trees, exotic animals, and inhabitants grateful for his wise rule† (Hochschild). After Leopold’s death in 1909, some thought it would be the end of the â€Å"era† as the author puts it, but that’s not the case. A few years later, Britain recognized the Congo as the Belgian Congo and they made vast improvements. They switched the rubber industry to cultivated rubber rather than wild rubber and taxes replaced â€Å"severed† hands as a way of forcing labor. However, the Belgian did no better running the new Congo than Leopold and realized that they needed cultivated rubber instead of wild rubber vines, and noticed that the vines were getting scarce. This caused them to harvest other products like cotton, and palm oil as well as some wild rubber. This was the process until the 1920’s when â€Å"white traders bought wild rubber from villagers pressed to pay their taxes†(Hochschild 276). Leopold’s â€Å"Ghost† lived on for many years after he died and when WWI came around forced labor still was brutal. Furthermore, you might ask yourself what happened to all the money that Leopold invested from his rule in the Congo. Since he didn’t get along with his three daughters, Hochschild mentions that his wishes were to â€Å"disinherit† the money from them and to â€Å"die a billionaire† (Hochschild 275). Leopold hid his money in the German Foundation, and even went as far as buying fifty-eight pieces of real estate. The Belgian government spent years trying to find out what to do with King Leopold’s money and was interrupted by WWI since most of the â€Å"entities† involved were Belgium, France, and Germany. In conclusion, I think the book was quite interesting to read although it took a while to really understand the theme. Ultimately, I do think what happened here was genocide and was one of the cruelest happenings in history. Overall, I thought it was a very interesting book and Hochschild shows how characters like, Morel and Sheppard define these people. Hochschild wasn’t afraid to reveal the greed that Leopold had and how he demonstrated â€Å"justification† for his doings. Although, the author raised a lot of question in the book because he really wasn’t clear on how he felt about colonialism himself. At times he shows that Belgian Congo was the worst things to have happened in that time and other times he shows that colonialism was everywhere at that time. In the end, the story of the native people here will live on forever and they will never get the justice that they truly deserve. However, in a way this book lets their voices be heard, and Hochschild makes it a point for them not to be just â€Å"erased† from history.

The first statement the narrator utters when he discovers Bartleby is dead is that no one can live without dining. An effect can only be deemed possible if it has a logical cause. However, god’s omnipotence or what is logically possible for a divine being like him cannot be measured in terms of what is humanly possible. It would be very hard for someone with such devotion to god as that of a saint to accept that his omnipotence can be diminished by something as mundane as a computer software. Therefore, for a person like him, god, without question will always be omnipotent. To back that claim, saint Aquinas would argue that god being beaten by a software in chess is illogical, a predicate that is not compatible with its subject, and inconceivable, therefore, god’s omnipotence cannot be challenged by whether he could be beaten by a software or whether he could create such a software. There is a saying that a teacher’s greatness can be measured if he can be surpassed by his student. It would mean that the student has learned everything he could from the teacher and even more than the teacher could teach him. That could also apply to a creator; a creator’s greatness can be measured if he can be surpassed by his creation. It will always be possible for a creator for create something greater than him, because he would know his own limitations, therefore he could improve those in his creation. The only question is whether he would allow himself to be surpassed by something that came from him or if he will deliberately limit the capabilities of his creation thus maintaining his superiority over it. As I had mentioned earlier, people will always find ways to defend what they believe in; such as the case of Saint Aquinas’ philosophies regarding his god. The way he agued god’s omnipotence seems as if he just asserts gods divinity and that his greatness cannot be questioned or diminished. Given the earlier argument regarding the creator and his creation, it only seems that there is an omnipotent god because god himself may only be limiting the capabilities of his creations to a level lower than that of his to maintain his power over them. Regard For Those Who Are Weaker In Society Written in Torah are lessons and stories about how God created Earth, animals, plants, day and night, the sun, and also how God created man to dominate over all living things. Within Torah is a story of Abram and his relationship with God. Abram or Abraham had a covenant with God. God promised to bless the nation and Abraham. Abraham had no rules or law to follow he simply had to have faith in God and believe in him. God said to Abraham â€Å"†¦ You shall be the ancestor of nations.No longer shall your name be Abram but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. And I will give to you, and to your offspring after you, all t he land of Canaan, for a perpetual holding; and I will be their God† (Genesis 17:4-8).The covenant between Abraham and God said that Abraham was blessed and so his descendants shall be blessed, so they were. Moses, one of Abraham’s descendants, was spoken to by God and he was told to go into Egypt and rescue the Israelites from slavery. Moses did what God had asked of him and rescued the Israelites; they were weak, poor and in bad shape. God had mercy on them and he heard their cries and helped. He made another covenant and this time it was a bit different. He promised to make the Israelite his treasured people if they would agree to follow and keep his commandments.This was good for the Israelites because they came from a place where times were hard and God saved them and made them his people. Torah instructs the Israelites to follow the laws given to them through the covenant between themselves and God. Morally the Israelites are to treat others as they would like to be treated. They were once slaves to the Egyptians and treated very poorly. The Israelites should have mercy on others less privileged because God had mercy on them. When Moses was leading the Israelites out of Egypt they were not completely grateful.They complained to Moses. The Israelites said â€Å"If only we had died by the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger† (Exodus 16:3). With the complaints and cries from the Israelites, God sent them bread to eat and gave them only one rule. They were not to take more than a day’s worth of bread at a time. Even though God gave the Israelites laws he still had mercy on them and helped them when they cried out.The laws were a test of faith and trueness between God and the Israelites. God helps those in need, when they are really in need of help. Since the Torah is written to the Israelites it should be read as a lesson and the lessons should be taken into consideration to the readers. There are many commandments that the Israelites are instructed to follow. A lot of them have to do with regard for those who are weaker in society. Just like God had mercy on the Israelites, the Israelites should have mercy on others because they once were the weaker persons in society.

Executive Summary This memorandum is intended to communicate the deferred tax issues of Lucent Technologies Inc. on the basis of analysis of the veracity of the situation according to the reporting framework’s guidelines to anticipate unfavorable implications that had been resulted due to poor performance of the company over the past years. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) is the recognized body for making pronouncements as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAPs) in the United States.The FASB has promulgated Statement of Financial Accounting Standard # 103 â€Å"Accounting for Income Taxes† which specifically prescribes the treatment of income taxes of corporate entities and guidance for how deferred taxes should be recorded either an asset or a liability in the financial statements. However, under the prevailing circumstances, it is apparent that the company will not be able to generate positive taxable income in the future periods to offset the losses.Accordingly, as per FAS # 109 the valuation allowance has to be reviewed against potential tax assets and for any items in which it is more probable through persuasive and reliable evidence that the asset will not reduce future taxable income Analysis Since after the inception of its operations in November 1995, the quality production and innovat ion were key business success factors. However, eventually with the passage of time the entry of new firms in the telecom industry such as Alcatel, Ciena, Cisco, Ericsson, and Motorola Inc. , have intensified the level of competition.As a result of this most industry participant opted to strengthen their relationships with large service providers, as they represented over 70% of global carrier spending. The collapse of competitive local exchange carriers and other competitors of incumbent carriers had resulted in fewer customers. In addition the large service providers, has been consolidating, thus giving the remaining service providers additional buying power. Furthermore, as service providers continued to reduce their capital spending, fewer sales opportunities existed.Moreover, a number of its existing competitors were very large companies with substantial technical, engineering, and financial resources, brand recognition and established relationships with global service provider s. These competitors were able to offer low prices, additional products or services, or other incentives. These potential competitors were also in a stronger position to respond quickly to new or emerging technologies and to undertake more extensive marketing campaigns, adopt more aggressive pricing policies, and make more attractive offers to potential customers, employees, and third-party agents.During the company’s financial year ending September 30, 2001, Lucent had lost $16 billion placing its retained earnings into a net deficit. Subsequently, in the first and seconds quarters of fiscal 2002, the trend continued with losses of $423 million and $495 million respectively. As of September 30, 2001, Lucent had tax credit carry forwards of $898 and federal, state and local, and non-U. S. net operating loss carry forwards of $ 1,640 (tax effected), most of which expire primarily after the year 2019.As of September 30, 2001, Lucent has recorded valuation allowances totaling $ 742 against these carry forwards, primarily in certain states and foreign jurisdictions in which Lucent has concluded it is ‘more likely than not’ that these carry forwards will not be recognized. Hence, cumulative losses weigh heavily in the overall assessment.During the fiscal 2002 third quarter end review, the company should need to consider several significant developments in determining the need for a full valuation allowance including; * The continuity and recently more severe market decline * Uncertainty and lack of visibility in the telecommunication market as a whole * A significant decrease in sequential quarterly revenue levels * A decrease in sequential earnings after several quarters of sequential improvements The necessity for further restructuring and cost reduction actions to attain profitability As a result of this assessment, the company has established a full valuation allowance for its remaining net deferred tax assets as at June 30, 2002. Lucent recorded a non-cash charge of $ 5. 83 billion, or $ 1. 70 per share, to provide a full valuation allowance on its remaining deferred tax assets as June 30, 2002. This charge was partially offset by a third quarter income tax benefit of $282 million on a pro forma basis, and $ 505 million on as-reported basis.In order for the company’s management to determine whether a valuation allowance is required, managers should consider all available evidence. FAS # 109 divides this evidence into negati ve (that is, the asset is unlikely to be realized) and positive evidence. Negative evidence includes items such as cumulative losses in recent years; a history of operating loss carries forwards expiring unused, losses expected in early future years, or assets expected to reverse in a single year in a cyclical business.The statement declares that forming a conclusion that a valuation allowance is not needed is difficult when there is negative evidence. In contrast, positive includes a strong earnings history (exclusive of any current loss), existing contracts that will produce taxable income in the period of the asset turnaround, or a large excess of appreciated asset value over a tax basis and tax planning strategies.Accordingly, based on the two types of evidences mentioned above, the views of the SEC staff with respect to valuation allowances on deferred tax assets and the types of questions that they might ask if they reviewed the Lucent’s financial reports are as follows ; * With respect to valuation allowances the SEC is likely to look at the basics for having or not having a valuation allowance, the timing of recording changes, or consistency with other forward-looking information * Comments relating to the adequacy of disclosures, the actual descriptions of rate reconciliation items, deferred tax assets and liabilities, uncertain ax positions, timing of reversals, or expiration of net operating losses in various jurisdictions. * The SEC may also ask questions relating to contractual obligations * The SEC may also ask for clarification related to management’s material estimates and/or judgments. It is important that changes in estimates be well documented. * Disclose the amount of pretax income that the company needs to generate to realize the deferred tax assets. The SEC staff may ask to include an explanation of the anticipated future trends included in the company’s projections of future taxable income. Confirmation to them that t he anticipated future trends included in the company’s assessment of the realizability of its deferred tax assets are the same anticipated future trends used in estimating the fair value of your reporting units for purposes of testing goodwill for impairment and any other assessment of your tangible and intangible assets for impairment. Disclose that the deferred tax liabilities that the company is relying on in its assessment of the realizability of its deferred tax assets will reverse in the same period and jurisdiction and are of the same character as the temporary differences giving rise to the deferred tax assets. * Indicate the nature of the uncertainty and the nature of each event that could occur in the next twelve months that would cause the change for each significant tax position.Conclusion It has been evident from the above analysis that Lucent has been facing poor performance and as many of its assets have very long lives but it’s still not indicative of f uture viability of these assets. Until an appropriate level of profitability is reached, Lucent should not expect to recognize any significant tax benefits in future results of its operations.The company must use judgment in considering the relative impact of negative and positive evidence. The weight given to the potential effect of negative and positive evidence should be commensurate with the extent to which it can be objectively verified. The second condition is that one of the spouses must do the majority of the crop growing and subsistence, their purpose for the marriage, as opposed to love. The third condition is tha t in some societies men have more sexual freedom than women, discouraging love in favor of sexual rights. As far as sexual jealousy goes, it appears that men are more likely to become violent, and are more concerned with men they see as rivals for their mates. When reading this article we must remember to take into account cultural relativism. A Brief History of Hieroglyphics

The word hieroglyph has been applied to the scripts of the Indus civilization and of the Hittites, who also possessed other scripts, in addition to the Mayan, the Incan, and Easter Island writing forms, and also the signs on the Phaistos Disk on Crete, but the strict meaning of the word is used only to describe the carvings on Egyptian monuments. The most ancient hieroglyphs can be dated back to the end of the 4th millennium BC. They describe scenes and are cut in relief, or into the stone, mostly in chapels or tombs. Although it is impossible to know, but these early signs are probably based on the same system that the later set of hieroglyphics, known as classical hieroglyphics is based. Hieroglyphic signs were representations of living beings or inanimate objects by simplistic drawings. Over the years, some of the representations fell out of meaning, such as clubs, which at one time were used as weapons, and other weapons took their place. But they glyph stayed. Sometimes the object described by the glyph completely fell out of daily use and the meaning eventually became lost or it was distorted beyond recognition. Always only a few people in a limited circle understood the script. Only those who needed the knowledge in their professions were able to acquire the task of writing and reading the glyphs. These people were, for example, officials, doctors, and priests. Since the glyphs were too complex for everyday use, hieratic script was developed. Easier abbreviated script was developed for writing by brush stroke on a medium such as papyrus. Classical hieroglyphics evolved through the need to identify a pictorial representation of an event, such as a hunt or a particular battle. Hieroglyphs were added to scenes to signify that the work of art was not just an unknown war or such, but a specific one. This also one of the first times that we see people interested in preserving their history for others to learn about in later times. It was this new attitude toward time and toward history as unique events in time led to the invention of hieroglyphic writing. Hieroglyphics dominated monumental and sacred writings and was accepted in the Greece until the situation was altered with the conversion of the area to Christianity in the nd and 3rd centuries AD. The new religion fought against the Egyptian polytheism and traditions, and with its victory, the Greek script triumphed. The ability to understand the script was lost for many hundreds of years until the failure of Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt turned up the Rosetta Stone on which was written the same statement in three languages, Classical hieroglyphics, Hieratic script, and Greek. With the discovery of thi s asphalt tablet, archeologists were finally able to begin to unlock the key to understanding the long dead written language of hieroglyphics.

In addition to improving American high school system, the Gates Foundation actively seeks to change public policy regarding American schools, which include implementation of transparency in school finance, multiple independent school providers, and performance-based accountability (Hill, 2006). The Foundation's commitment to increasing the number of smaller, personalized high schools, and a knowledge base for success in these schools, has led to the National School District and Network Grants Program. Effects of Film on Driving Behaviour Mass Media Society Jeremy Philip Monteiro      Imbert Narumanan Sebastian Lim Jit Shern Contents page (Jump to) Introduction We conducted a study on college students here in Tunku Abdul Rahman University-College Penang to see if a movie could affect their driving behavior. We selected the movie, The Fast The Furious. The choice of movie is selected because the movie itself is involves high-speed chases and racing with vehicles that are modified to push itself to the limits. The movie itself is an action and also a thriller; it was released in 2001 and directed by Rob Cohen and distributed by Universal Pictures. The main cast of the movie are Vin Diesel and Paul Walker; Walker plays as an undercover cop who must stop a team of hijackers who are led by Diesel. Brian gets involve with the hijackers and falls in love with Diesel’s sister and must choose to be an accomplice in Diesel’s plan or blow it all over by arresting him and his crew. Throughout the movie there will be conflict, some family oriented scenes but its main focus are on the adrenaline-rushing fast cars. This research was done on college students, specifically in TARUC Penang. There were about 30 students who were asked to be interviewed using a prepared set of questions. The interview was conducted informally as it would make the interviewee more comfortable as well as to stimulate open ended answers rather than close ended. The idea is to see if these college students who have watched the movie affected in anyway in terms of driving. The title of our research is â€Å"Do movies affect students’ driving? A review on The Fast The Furious. Literature Review The theory that is used in this research is the Media Effects theory. Media Effect theory explains as how the media can affect the society and how the society can affect the media. The concept of this theory relies on both the media as well as the society. However there are several implications that are negative made of this theory which is saying that people try to follow exactly as to what they see. For instance, â€Å"copycat murder† that took place in 2004 when a boy was murdered by his best friend and the game ‘Manhunt’ was instantly banned due the style of murder was assume to be similar to the game. The theory defines moral panic in relation to representations of sex, violence and deviant behavior and its supposed effects on youth. Moral panic is the feeling that the situation is out of control in some way, and therefore represents a threat to the moral order. The media effects theory was firstly proposed by the Frankfurt School of social researchers in the 1920’s from people’s reaction to Nazi propaganda. The hypodermic model explains that the media is like a drug that society may be addicted to, stating that the audience are helpless to defend themselves against the media and just behave passively. This theory is quite similar to the Social Learning theory by Bandura where a studied made on 2 groups of children who are exposed to the violent content on television and the other group is exposed to the positive content. Later, both groups were given a doll and the group who were exposed to the violent content reacted violently towards the doll. This helps determine that children may behave according to what they see or exposed to. Research The purpose of this research is to find out if a movie such as The Fast The Furious may or may not be an affect or influence the driving in any way. In order to ensure that the information we use in this research is accurate and reliable, we decided to use a primary research method to obtain our results. Which is to interview our respondents face to face and gather their feedback. The idea of an interview is to obtain a qualitative research which is in hope to receive in-depth answers to the questions. The target audience were selected at random in college and most of them were from the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities. Based on the nature of the movie, we could assume that the producers of the franchise were targeting teenagers and young adults. Therefore we have decided to interview our fellow college-mates for this research. Moreover, most the students in TARUC have just gotten their driving license and are experiencing unsupervised driving for the first time. Our team has chosen 30 individuals within the campus grounds and approached them in the canteen, the library and the foyer. Below are the ten questions that were prepared for the interview: Have you watched The Fast and the Furious? Where did you watch the movie? What do you think of the movie? How many times have you watched the movie? Do you think the movie influences your driving style? In what way? After watching the movie, do you see yourself attempting to replicate the stunts you have seen? Which scene in the movie would you say made an impact on your driving? Do you think it is dangerous or safe to be mimicking the driving from the movie? After watching the movie would you say that your driving abilities have improved? Do you feel that the movie can play a role in how you drive? These ten questions are made specifically to understand how the student thinks or feel after watching the movie, especially to see if the movie has made a change on their driving abilities and if they are aware of it. We took note of what the 30 individuals had answered and evaluated them. Findings Based on the questions above, we have found that all 30 respondents have answered that they have watched the movie before. Since it being an old movie that was released in 2001, majority of students answered that they have watch the movie on television. However there were a minority that had answered cinema. Majority of students had answered that they think that the movie is a good and entertaining movie which falls as a positive review. However a minority of them had also answered that the movie comes off as an unrealistic and bad movie which implies as a negative review. To the question above, majority of students answered once and minority of them had answered twice. Based on the question above, all 30 students who have watched the movie claims that they are unaffected by the movie. To question 6, only 2 students answered â€Å"yes† where else majority of them answered that they will do not see themselves wanting to replicate the stunts they see in the movie. As to question 7, majority of students claimed the there is no scene applicable. However, a minority of 6% answered the racing scene made an impact on their driving. Based on the question, all 30 students have answered that it is dangerous to be mimicking the driving from the movie. According the chart above, minority of students claimed that their driving abilities have improved after watching the movie. However, majority of them said that the movie did not improve their driving abilities. Based on the final question, majority of students feel that the movie does not play a role in how they drive today and a minority of 23% said that it does. Conclusion We’ve learned that the conducting research isn’t an easy task and takes time to produce result. We also learn that most students find it hard to produce quality answers as they rather provide brief answers. From the findings above, we are able to deduce that the influence brought upon by a movie has not affected the driving style of college students in our campus. This is solely based on their answers of course; however we are unable to physically prove at the moment if it has taken an effect Most students found the movie to be fun and entertaining but however manage to realized that the movie is unrealistic and are aware of the dangers involve if they were to follow what they see in the movie. Despite having good overall reviews of the highly action packed scenes from the movie itself, students find that stunts coordinated in the movie is rather dangerous and definitely will not be attempted in their daily driving routine. In short, based on the majority of answers we gathered, after a watching the movie, The Fast The Furious, students at Tunku Abdul Rahman University-College are not affected by it. Odonata The damselfly species is part of an insect group called Odonata. Odonata consists of dragonflies, which are the suborder Anisoptera, and damselflies, which are the suborder Zygoptera. The insect group Odonata is very small, probably containing only about 5,000 living species (Corbet, 1999). Odonata, typically called Odonates, are usually found close to bodies of water, looking for small insects to eat. Adult Odonates catch their prey while in flight, while younger Odonates, called nymphs, hunt for their prey at the bottom of the body of water they live in. Nymphs eat almost any insect small enough for them to digest (book on iCloud). Nymphs Nymphs live in water throughout their entire developmental stage, which can take anywhere from three weeks to more than eight years, depending on the species of the nymph and it’s location and habitat. They undergo eight to seventeen molts (Corbet, 1999), although the amount of molts undergone depends on the species. When a nymph’s developmental stage is complete, it climbs out of it’s previous home in the water, a final molt is undergone, and an adult damselfly appears (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2010). Nymphs have a set of gills along their abdomen, which are used for breathing as well as a transportation device and a way of escaping from predators in an emergency. Water is ushered into the gills, and then forcefully emitted, propelling themselves forward and farther away from their enemies (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2010). Nymphs, despite their excellent predatorily abilities, are usually hunted by fish, although occasionally they are also hunted by birds, crayfish, frogs, and each other. When their development is complete and they are finally an adult dams... .... Transferring sperm depends on the species of damselfly because the sex organs are particularly elaborate and specific to the each species. Organs in the male damselflies that allow the end of its’ abdomen to attach to the back of the females’ head correspond between each individual species, making mating between separate species nearly impossible. Some species of damselflies lay their eggs either inside or on plant tissue, which is either above or in water. Some females climb beneath the surface of the water to position their eggs and remain there for an hour, or perhaps more. Some species submerge their abdomen in the water, so the eggs wash off, or put them on leaves close to the water’s edge. This is sometimes done while the damselfly is in flight. Other species simply allow their eggs to drop onto the surface of the water while they are flying (Corbet, 1999).

Her deeds not only saved lives during these terrible time’s but also gave other African Americans the courage to stand up for what they believe in and achieve equal rights for men in women in the world no matter what their skin color or gender was. Born to the parents of slaves Harriet Tubman changed the world in more ways than one and will be explained in the essay. Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross to her slave parents Ben and Harriet Green. The specific date of her birth is said to be between the years of 1820 and 1821 but there is no actual record of her birthday. This was a common problem of the time for many of the American slaves born in this era. Being born into an African American slave family during the 1800’s, Harriet took on the task of being a slave during the early time in her life period. Her first task as a child was to take care of her of her younger brother and also was responsible for the care of one of one of the slave owner’s babies. The work that Harriet was assigned was work that the men never had to do but all work that was done on these plantations or farms should’ve been looked at as equal in all ways. During this time even women slaves were being discriminated against, they automatically were discriminated against at birth when they came out as a girl. The women were thought of as less because they didn’t go out into the fields to do the hard work, but without the women doing their work the men’s work wouldn’t have been done. Life was hard for Harriet during these early years as she was responsible for this young baby and had to take care of it day and night. One would perceive that taking care of this baby at such a young age would be a reason for Harriet’s motherly side towards all the slaves she later helped escape from slavery so they could be free. Harriet’s young life was filled with many experiences and hard times during her childhood. She contracted the measles at a young age she had an incident when at a store, a slave owner threw a two pound weight at another slaves head and hit Harriett. The other slave had left their field without out permission and went to the store. The slave owner told her to help restrain the irate slave but she refused to. The slave owner threw the two pound weight at the problem slave but missed and instead hit Harriet. Harriet did not have any serious damage done to her from the weight but one would think this was a key point in her life when she realized she wanted to be free and to also help other slaves become free of these evil slave owners. Women have been oppressed in the world since the start of time. Men have always been looked at as if they are more important or more useful in the world we live in. We can see that in Harriet Tubman’s case, Her work as a child was mainly as a babysitter of the children or used in the house as a slave. Even during the time of slavery women weren’t granted the same rights as their men counterparts. Most of the time the women slaves were used as maids, caretakers, or doing gardening. These were duties that they thought were suitable for the women and without the women doing these duties the farm or plantation wouldn’t run. Men were mainly used to the harder and more physical labor on the plantations or farms. They were sent out into the fields every day to harvest the crops so that the owner could make his money to maintain his lifestyle. The women were kept back to do the chores around the house and this is where the persona that women are supposed to stay home and do housework comes from even today. The sad part is that people that thought the men were the most important workers, but without the women none of the duties would have been finished. They served and equal role in making the plantation work and weren’t given the credit they deserved. Without the women staying in the house and looking after the children or cooking the meals, none of the men would have food or somewhere to sleep when they were done with their work. One can see that every duty should’ve been seen as equal. The women could do the same duties as the men and vice versa either way the duties are all needed to make the system work. Women’s rights have improved drastically since that time but there still is a stigma that men are better than women. This type of view is wrong and shouldn’t even be thought about in the world we live into today. Woman server a great purpose in the world we live in and should be considered equal in all aspects of life. If one were to ponder this idea seriously we can see without out women no children are born. The sad truth is that women still have to fight for their rights in every aspect of their daily lives. The typical women in society makes only . 70 cents for every dollar that a man would make doing the same job. One would think that one hundred and fifty years later women would be considered equal counterparts to men. â€Å"There has been progress toward greater workplace equality, but we still have a long ways to go. In the United States, most occupations are gendered. Many jobs are segregated by sex; there are large wage gaps, and numerous women experience sexual harassment and pregnancy discrimination. These types of walls are being broken down every day but still need to be dealt with in a faster and more efficient fashion. As we know slavery was a horrible part of the American society until December of 1865 when it was abolished and Harriet Tubman experienced this horrendous travesty of American society. Harriet Tubman experienced this until one day she decided it was enough a nd escaped from her slavery with her brothers on September 17, 1849. This escape was delayed because of her brothers wish to go back to his family, but weeks later Harriet had had enough and finally escaped. Guided by the light of the moon Harriet traveled at night for the fear if she traveled during the day she could be caught by slave catchers, who would’ve taken her home for a bounty. She passed through many conductors’ houses during her travel, conductors of the Underground Railroad, and finally escaped to Pennsylvania a northern state that had already abolished slavery. This escape thus allowed Harriet Tubman to one day become a conductor in the underground railroad herself to allow other slaves to escape to the freedom they deserved. It read, â€Å"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude†¦ shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. â€Å"] This single, yet monumental, law would go on to start a bloody civil war of the north versus the south and end with freedom of all slaves throughout the whole United States of America. When the Civil War began, President Lincoln’s professed goal was the restoration of the Union. But early in the war, the Union began keeping escaped slaves rather than returning them to their owners, so slavery essentially ended wherever the Union army was victorious. In September 1862, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in areas that were still in rebellion against the Union. This measure opened the issue of what to do about slavery in Border States that had not seceded or in areas that had been captured by the Union before the proclamation. In 1864, an amendment abolishing slavery passed the Senate but died in the House as Democrats rallied in the name of states’ rights. The election of 1864 brought Lincoln back to the White House and significant Republican majorities in both houses, so it appeared the amendment was headed for passage when the new Congress convened in March 1865. Lincoln preferred that the amendment receive bipartisan support–some Democrats indicated support for the measure, but many still resisted. The amendment passed 119 to 56, seven votes above the necessary two-thirds majority. Several Democrats abstained, but the 13th Amendment was sent to the states for ratification, which came in December 1865. With the passage of the amendment, the institution that had indelibly shaped American history and had started the Civil War was eradicated. † This excerpt shows that the hard work and dedication of Harriet Tubman had paid off during her times a slave and thus created freedom for all her African American brothers and sisters to become free. Though it did not make an immediate impact for African Americans to have equal rights it started that movement that has caused everyone in the United States to be equal today. The amazing aspect of Harriet Tubman is her knack for always wanting to help other’s in their slavery. In 1851 Harriet decided to go back to her hometown of Dorchester County to get her husband any many other slaves. Even thought this amazing woman was free she decided to risk her own life and freedom to help other have their own freedom. After a short time of being there she helped eleven other slaves escape in the December of 1851. They escaped safely back to Harriet’s new life in Philadelphia and in freedom. For someone to risk there own life just to help others shows the humanitarian she is. Harriet’s life was full of many different stories but the most important one is work in suffragist activism towards the end of her life. She was one of the women who fought for all women’s rights and also the right to vote. Sadly that would not be passed during Harriet’s life time. Harriet was a woman who fought for the freedom of slaves and also showed that a woman can change the world. She was one of the very prominent women who helped to free slaves and help them start their new life’s and even risked her own life doing so.
