The Hero   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Zorro, Lassie, Hercules, and Beowulf all have something in common, they are all considered hero’s. It does not matter if the hero is a man, woman, animal or an intimate object that springs to life. It does not matter where the hero comes from or how old he or she is. The only thing that a hero needs to do to be a hero, according to Joseph Campbell, is follows a predefined path of a hero and have some common characteristics of one, too. Joseph Campbell in one of the most knowledgeable people on the subject of a hero. According to Joseph Campbell many hero’s have completed the same deed over and over again throughout history. He points out that a hero is not limited to one particular time or place. Campbell explains the details about what makes a hero a hero in his discussion The Hero’s Journey. The story of the hero must have a mystical quality. A hero’s characteristics should include doing something beyond the normal range of a human and giving up one’s life for something bigger. A hero’s sequence of events is began by the hero intentionally setting out on ones own to complete a physical deed for a moral objective. The hero is trying to shape a savage world out of his existing world. The hero departs from his home to fulfill his deed and then returns home again. The hero undergoes a mental development throughout the story through different trials that he or she is facing. This transforms the heroes state of consciousness. The hero learns to live in the system in which he or she is and does not fall victim to it. Lastly whatever is accomplished by the hero is lost when he or she dies. In the story of Beowulf the main character follows Campbell’s outline of a hero. It is an Anglo-Saxon poem that recounts the life of the hero Beowulf and this poem is one of the oldest existing poems in the English language.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  First of all for a hero to be a hero he needs to be present in a story that has a mystical quality about it, according to Campbell. The reader can see this mystical quality in Beowulf everywhere he or she looks. First of all as the story begins it talks of a tribe of people, called the Danes, rescuing a castaway baby at sea. The baby that the tribe rescues turns out later to be their king. Another mystical quality t... ...the path of a hero. First by setting out on one’s own to complete a physical deed for a moral obligation. Beowulf leaves Geatland on his own to kill Grendel to repay Hrothgar for his kindness to his father. Fulfilling each moral obligation is a step on the path of being a hero. Beowulf kills each monster because of a moral obligation and gives his king the riches he receives from each because it is his moral obligation to do so. A character departs from his or her home to go on an adventure and then return home again. Beowulf leavs his land to kills two monsters and then returns home again. Next a character will shape and savage world and through trials transform to a different state of counciousness. By fighting monsters and ruling the land Beowulf grows smarter and less selfish than he was before. The last step is to live in a system and finally have everything that is gained by the character lost. Beowulf lives in his system without becomming corrupt and in the end the peace and treasure that he fought for is lost by his people. When a character has the characteristics and follows the correct path then he or she is a hero. Beowulf is a hero.

A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol illustrates many themes of the Victorian era. Poverty, charity and greed are major themes of this work. This essay highlights examples of these themes as portrayed by Dickens.Poverty was a striking characteristic of Victorian England, especially noticeable in the cities.   The population grew exponentially during the nineteenth century so it is a very practical suggestion offered by the Ghost of Christmas Present when he observes of Tiny Tim, â€Å"If he be like to die, he had better do it, and decrease the surplus population†(Dickens).As a result of overpopulation, there was huge pressure on housing which in turn led to poor sanitary conditions and rampant destitution. ‘The ways were foul and narrow, the shops and houses wretched; the people half-naked, drunken, slipshod, ugly. Alleys and archways, like so many cesspools, disgorged their offences of smell, and dirt† (Dickens).Children from lower class families suffered hugely as a result of poverty during this era.Families sometimes had to turn their children out because they couldn’t afford to keep them. In Stave Two, Scrooge’s sister Fan says, â€Å"Father is so much kinder than he used to be, thatI was not afraid to ask him once more if you might come home and he said yes you should† (Dickens). Children all too often, were the open faces of poverty during this era. At the end of Stave Three, the Ghost of Christmas Future shows Scrooge his legacy as a result of his greed i.e. two very destitute children. â€Å"The boy is Ignorance. The girl is Want† (Dickens).With huge poverty, came the birth of social conscience amongst the middle and upper classes. Many charities that exist today have roots in the Victorian era. Scrooge gets a sudden attack of charity after seeing himself alone as a child.He says, â€Å"There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I should like to have given him something, thatà ¢â‚¬â„¢s all† (Dickens). Philanthropy also, was a growing practice and to die without leaving money to the less fortunate especially during such times of poverty, was almost unthinkable. â€Å"What has he done with his money?† asked a red-faced gentleman. â€Å"I haven’t heard†, said the man, â€Å"left it to his company, perhaps. He hasn’t left it to me. That’s all I know† (Dickens).Christmas time was the perfect opportunity to illustrate the charitable obligation of the rich to the poor.   Christmas time stressed traditional values of neighborliness, charity and good will.   Accordingly, Scrooge buys the largest turkey he can find for the Cratchits in order to change the course of the future.In Stave Two, the Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge a scene from Mr Fezziwig’s Ball in order to illustrate that happiness and cheer can be given to people without costing a fortune. Scrooge concludes, â€Å"The happiness he giv es is quite as great as if it cost a fortune† (Dickens).Whilst a lot of charity and philanthropy no doubt resulted from an honest desire to ease the suffering of the poor, guilt also played its part. Many assuaged their guilt by giving to charity but they also didn’t want to waste charity on the undeserving. If we were giving Scrooge the benefit of the doubt, perhaps this is why he chose not to give his money away. â€Å"No beggars implored him to bestow a trifle† (Dickens).The opposite of charity is greed. The Ghost of Christmas Present says, â€Å"There is nothing on which it is as hard as poverty, and there is nothing on it professes to condemn with such severity as the pursuit of wealth† (Dickens). Like Scrooge, if one dedicated his life only to the accumulation of wealth, he was likely to pay for it in death. â€Å"It’s likely to be a very cheap funeral† said the businessman, â€Å"for upon my life I don’t know of anybody to go t o it!†(Dickens)Victorian society norms dictated that it was literally unthinkable to be greedy. In Stave One, Scrooge is visited by men asking for donations. â€Å"What shall I put you down for?† asks the man. Scrooge replies, â€Å"Nothing!† The man misunderstands Scrooge, â€Å"You wish to be anonymous?† The church played an important role in imparting the virtues of charity and the consequences of greed. The Ghost of Christmas Present says to Scrooge, â€Å"It may be that in the sight of heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man’s child† (Dickens).

Twilight Book Report

Twilight is a series of four vampire-themed fantasy romance novels written by American author Stephenie Meyerv and the first novel is called Twilight with the same article as the series. It is about a love story of a girl and a vampire. Bella Swan moves to the cloudy town of Forks to live with her father, Charlie. For the first day of school, she finds herself on friendly terms with a few of the kids. She has lunch together with her new friends and meets Edward Cullen for the first time.She is transfixed by the beautiful Edward Cullen and gets to know more about him after she is saved with Edward’s supernatural speed and strength from an accident. They sonly fall in love with each other. With the protection of the Cullen family, she escapes from James, who tries to kill her. Unfortunately, she is seriously wounded, but Edward rescues her. Twilight is an original story which interested me a lot because it tells about a love story between two ‘people’ from a human w orld and a vampire world whose relationship is a typical and special one.The story line goes in a clear way and it lures me a lot to know about how the next step goes to. My favourite part of the book is the chapter ‘hide and seek’ which its article has already got my attention from my first sight. The chapter talks about how James tries to trick Bella to the dance studio that he has got her mother and attacks her. The description makes an atmosphere with suspense and mystery to excite readers and lead them to guess the plot. I would like to meet Edward the most. As a vampire, I believe he has a tough life to live in a human’s world and follow others’ living habit.I am so impressed with the power and the special gifts he received that he can read others’ mind. I would like to ask him questions about vampire’s history and what kinds of innate technique do other vampires get cause I am very interested it them. Lastly, I would ask if he ever thi nk that being a human is better than transforming into vampire. For common people, we feel cool to be a vampire but we can never know how it really feels for a true vampire to go through the experience. That’s what I am curious about the most about Edward.

This waste can be collected, separated and recycled for further use. The recycling project includes three main activities. Collection of organic wastes like wood, paper, food remains, plastic bottles, metal cans, glass, and bones. The collection needs proper gloves and storage containers. The separation includes, segregation of metal, glass, bones and food/paper stuff in separate containers. In this way you separate organic from inorganic waste. The organic waste is put in an airtight container and mixed with yeast. After 90 days the stuff converts into manure (natural fertilizer) and the liquid part of this can be used as a pesticide. Subsidies on items such as agricultural goods serve the purpose of stabilizing the market during periods of unusual production gluts or shortages. However, this is not the case for labor. The low skilled, low-end worker is subsidized by their co-workers and the employer as a form of economic welfare. For example, an employer needs to hire two people and he has a budget of $13.10 per hour for labor. One of the positions is more skilled, and the other is part time so he would like to hire an $8 per hour employee and a $5 per hour part time worker. However, the law says that he must hire two employees at $6.55 each to stay within his budget. The part time worker receives a $1.55 subsidy from his more skilled co-worker. The employer is faced with hiring a sub-standard employee for the $8 per hour slot, or hiring only one employ ee. According to Sowell, "Making it illegal to pay less than a given amount does not make a worker's productivity worth that amount, and if it is not, that worker is unlikely to be employed" (163-164). When goods, in this case labor, are overpriced the market demand is reduced. Rather than providing a living wage and a job, the minimum wage law drives down the cost of labor and transfers wealth from the lower economic classes to the minimum wage job holder. In addition to the reduction in demand for labor that comes as the result of mandatory pricing, there is also an oversupply of labor as many people make their services available that may not have been offered at the previous and lower prices. Teenagers, first time job seekers, part time workers, and seasonal workers may drive up the supply as their labor becomes worth more and working becomes more worthwhile. This adds to the evidence that most minimum wage jobs are filled by teenagers working summer jobs, part time help, and entry level workers, rather than coming from a background of poverty or the working poor (Even and MacPherson ii). Rather than increasing wages, the current minimum wage law creates an oversupply of labor and actually keeps wages down. The US has traditionally been a free market capitalist system, and intervening with an artificial floor on wages that is determined outside the market, reduces total employment in this environment of market economics. Labor, just as goods and services, is subject to the law of supply and demand. According to Ferguson, "The main influence is the pressure of demand on the supplies of goods and services and on the supply of labor. When demand exceeds supply there will be pressure on wages to rise" (215). The law of supply and demand further states that when prices rise, demand falls. This is especially true with prices that are set by a legal mandate.
